This Week's Top How Tos: ___________

How to set-up a live stream for gaming!

I'm sure a lot of you have wanted to show-off your game skills to the public or even just your friends. Nowadays, it's easy to accomplish. The program I recommend is Xsplit, which can be obtained from xsplit.com. Then make an account on Twitch.tv. Link the two together and bam! Instant live stream. I'm not even kidding, it's that easy. Your stream will show what's going on on your computer and what you're saying should you choose to include a mic. Quality depend son computer specs and upload. As far as computers go, streaming is processor heavy so you'll want at least a quad core for maximum performance. I recommend an upload of 2mb/s and more for better quality. That's all there is to know! Good luck!

How to become a game developer! The first step.

Oh the dream of many kids! To become the creator of the games they love to play. That dream isn’t a distant venture but in today’s modern society, is within your grasp. Want to become a game developer? I’m not going to tell you it’s easy. And some of you, I’m sure, already know you have to have a good amount of knowledge on the process. So where do you start? The best place to start is to increase your knowledge on the gaming industry. Play different types of games, especially the “AAA” blockbuster” titles. Companies love developers who know about different types of games. Ok maybe you already do that? Now what? You have to start somewhere, right? If you’re serious, become a beta tester for games. This job teaches you to have a keen eye for details and bugs so that the company can fix the errors and send out as perfect of a game as can be. Basically, you’re going to be paid to play video games? Sounds cool, right? Well, doing this might teach you to despise video games, but if you truly enjoy it, then you’ll be being paid for what you love to do. And if you don’t, well now you know to find a career somewhere else. Win, win, right? There are a number of places to find the job. Heck, you can even google it and find something right away. Some of the testing stations will require you to travel, but trust me, it’ll enhance your resume’ like no tomorrow. The game industry is all about experience. It’s highly competitive, so anything you can do to put you on top will help a ton.

How to survive long lines… we all stand in em’, right?

I’m sure all of us stand in line for something. Starbucks, Groceries, the DMV, whatever… A lot of us are impatient, a lot of us don’t mind them, but when it comes down to it we really all just deal with them! Nothing more. So what does it take to enhance your experience when waiting in lines? You know, when was the last time you talked to someone new? Talk to the person next to you. That’s a given, but often times, we forget to do it and skip out on meeting a good friend. Not a social person? Neither am I. How about listening to your ipod? Or playing a game on your phone or mobile device. Doesn’t take much at all. When you’re at a drive-thru, I’m sure you listen to music, so it doesn’t seem as bad as physically standing in a line. Now you should try some of these things out. I know these are all a given, but sometimes, humans need to be told, or at the very least, reminded, what to do.

How to save money… realistically!

We all know we want to spend money… Spend all of it your mind says!!! Well, stop that. It’s a bad habit, but there is, or are, ways around it. When you receive your pay check, SOME…SOME….not ALL, of it should go into a savings account. Often times, people have the mindset to “save all of it.” Not spend a thing they’ll often say. That just makes things worse! Inevitably, we’re going to spend money, whether it’s for that cake in the bakery window or that nice new shirt you passed walking in the mall. If you set a small, somewhat un-noticeable amount aside, you’re not going to spend it. Just be realistic with yourself, you’re going to spend money, so why not have some out that’s ready to spend? People will say that’s like making a budget. Well budgets are good, but that’s planning for what you’re going to buy, and not everyone can follow a list down to the dime. Sometimes, you’re going to want to add more to the list and unfortunately, at the last second. So if you make some of that money “vanish” and have some ready to make purchases, you can make things re-appear for that rainy day.

How to tame frizzy curls

The weather, humidity, dust and even daily stress leaves your hair having a mind of its own. Straight hair, in this situation, is more or less easily manageable. Just run a comb through it and you're done. But those of you who have curly hair that becomes frizzy at the slightest provocation know that it's just not that easy. Most women with frizzy wavy hair tend to go in for chemical and temporary straightening to give them that tamer look that is apparently preferred and easily managed. But the lesser known fact is that curls are the straight haired woman's secret desire. So instead of straightening, have a go at embracing those curls. First, use a shampoo that hydrates your hair, maybe something like Himalaya’s hydrating shampoo. This gives your frizzy hair the required moisture. Next, and most importantly, go for a curling conditioner made specifically for wavy and curly hair. Herbal Essences has one dedicated to waves and curls. You can even use the Herbal Essences shampoo if you like. Additionally, avoid combing your hair when it’s dry. Curls tend to knot and excessive combing will cause breakage. You can run a big toothed comb through your tresses when you’ve applied conditioner. This not only removes all knots with absolute ease, it also massages the conditioner in beautifully. Oiling your hair twice a week has proven beneficial to many people. So if you don’t mind the oil, give yourself that regular champi before washes. What you’re going to get is that always loved, just-out-of-bed messy look that others spend hours at the parlour waiting to achieve. So go ahead and love the curls.

How to choose a Masters' dissertation topic

Choosing a dissertation topic can be the single most difficult task you undertake during your entire Masters' course. While topics for most of your other assignments are clearly set, your dissertation is your baby - your idea, your interest and your creation. So where does the problem arise? The problem is that your topic has to satisfy multiple criteria. It has to please your supervisor, it has to be original while being inspired by previous research topics, there should be sufficient theory to support you topic and most important of all, it should be interesting for you. The best way to decide on a topic is to focus on one single concept – The Strategic Gap. The Strategic Gap is basically that unanswered question that you get when you study two concepts that contradict each other and leave some point open for further probing. For example, the dressing sense of a group that is collectivist in culture is meant to be uniform – everyone dresses alike. But the very fact that new fashions enter such cultures displays innovation – a trait expected only of individualistic cultures and disapproved of in collectivist cultures. So the Gap: Is the uniform dressing of collectivist cultures a subsequence to innovative behaviour displayed by some individualistic persons within the collectivist culture. And if so, can that culture be considered truly collectivist? This topic combines two diverse concepts: that of culture and fashion. More often than not, any two topics, however diverse from each other, can be combined to find a strategic gap – a previously unstudied question. This allows you the freedom to study a topic that you are genuinely interested in while giving you adequate theory on each point of view allowing you to make your case and provide your supervisor with a report that puts forth a previously untouched study. So go ahead, make a list of the topics you like, find out what the academics have to say about them and read between the lines to see where two of them contradict each other and consequently, pave the way for you.

How to manage curly hair

Are your curls a hot tangled, frizzy mess? Maybe you aren't treating them properly, as a girl with curly hair I know they can be hard to manage. Here are a few tips and tricks on how to keep your curls from looking less frizzy and lifeless, and more alive and bouncy! Use products that are right for you. If you notice your curls aren't looking their best it could be your shampoo and conditioner, switch it up and go for products made especially for girls with curls. Let your conditioner sit in your hair for at least 3 minutes while showering, this will help make your hair softer and easier to comb through. Be gentle to your curls when combing out your hair work in sections from bottom to top. Next, apply a frizz control cream or serum to damp hair after showering. This will help your curls from frizzing up and leave your hair soft and shiny. Diffusing hair is also a quick and easy way to give yourself amazing curls. A diffuser is an an attachment piece put onto a hairdryer that lightly distributes heat. perfect for girls with curly hair. not only will a hair diffuser dry your hair qucikly, it will give you soft bouncy voluminous curls. Now who doesn't want that? A few quick tips like these can take your curls from "what the heck?" to "Perfect 10!"-Anne

How to Keep Your Skin Looking Healthy

Anything that looks dry and dull just is not appealing. Face it, we've all had the mornings when we wake up, look in the mirror and think, "Why does my skin look dry and lifeless? Am I getting enough water, enough rest, enough vitamins?" It could be any combination of the above and/or "Have you exfoliated lately?" Women love facials and know the immediate benefits they see of their skin right after having one. It's glowing but not oily and it looks vibrant and alive. The same can be done and said for exfoliating the rest of the skin on our body. Especially hands, feet, elbows and knees. There are some great products out on the market in the form of walnut scrubs, sugar scrubs, salt scrubs, pumice scrubs, etc. Providing that you don't have broken skin, allergies or skin ailments that prohibit the use of these products, everyone's skin would benefit greatly with some assistance in sloughing off dead and dry outer skin cells. My advice, start with something gentle such as sugar scrub. Use it twice a week at first and after a few weeks you may only require weekly usage. If after a few weeks of using it twice a week you don't feel as if you are getting positive results, move up to something slightly more abrasive such as salt scrub. I would never recommend that you use any scrub more than twice a week. Also, when shopping for a body scrub, read the ingredients. Stay away from anything with SLS, SLES and/or Paraben. I personally use the brand that I manufacture The Bath Divas but prior to marketing my own line I used Bath and Body and Melalueca. Visit http://www.thebathdivas.com/product_p/ss-1.htm to purchase a wonderful and affordable sugar scrub. We guarantee it!
